In the biting winds of the Gobi desert, temperatures plummet below minus forty degrees Celsius. To survive this ruthless terrain, Capra hircus goats develop a sub-fleece of microscopic delicacy beneath their coarse outer coats.

The Measure of Excellence: 14.5 Microns

Commercial knitwear often blends short-staple fibers that pill after a single season. At AURA Atelier, our standards permit only fibers measuring under 15 microns in diameter with a minimum staple length of 38 millimeters.

During the spring molt, nomadic herdsmen gently hand-comb the animals, gathering the down without causing stress or harm. Only a few ounces of this precious underfleece are harvested per goat each year, making genuine fine-gauge cashmere an intrinsically scarce luxury.

Spinning with Italian Precision

Once washed and dehaired, the raw fiber is dispatched to our multi-generational spinning mills in Biella, Italy. Here, using spring water fed directly from Alpine glaciers, the fibers are spun into 2/28 Nm two-ply yarns that balance loftiness with structural durability.

"When knitted on 18-gauge Japanese flat-bed machines, the resulting fabric drapes like silk while cocooning the wearer in comforting warmth."

Caring for Heritage Cashmere

Contrary to popular myth, fine cashmere should not be dry cleaned frequently. Hand washing in cold water with pH-neutral wash preserves the natural lanolin within the fibers, allowing the knitwear to grow softer and more lustrous with every gentle cleansing.
